Beschreibung
Das Bildnis der Lady Sunderlin gehört zu den wichtigsten letzten Werken des Malers und ist fast gleichzeitig mit Gainsboroughs großem Spätwerk in der Gemäldegalerie, den Marsham-Kindern von 1787, entstanden. Lady Sunderlin (1745–1831) war die älteste Tochter Godolphin Roopers aus Great Berkhamstead (Hertfordshire). Sie heiratete 1778 Richard Malone, einen reichen Rechtsanwalt aus London, der 1785 von George III. zum Baron Sunderlin of Lake Sunderlin erhoben wurde. Reynolds erhielt daraufhin den Auftrag für ein lebensgroßes Porträt, für das bereits im November 1786 das Honorar von £ 157,10 bezahlt wurde.Reynolds griff auf den klassischen barocken Bildnistypus zurück, der im 17. Jahrhundert von van Dyck in England eingeführt worden war und noch im 18. Jahrhundert als Vorbild für Repräsentationsporträts galt. In seinen jährlichen Ansprachen anlässlich der Preisverleihung der Royal Academy, deren Präsident Reynolds seit 1768 war, hatte er immer wieder begründet, warum die Verwendung traditioneller Bildformeln für den Maler so wichtig sei, und hatte in seinen eigenen Porträts, wenn »grand style« gefordert war, aus Bildern von Holbein und Michelangelo bis van Dyck zitiert, manchmal sogar als Persiflage. Die Kenntnis solcher Anspielungen und deren Abwandlung sind daher wichtig für das Verständnis seiner Bildnisse. Wenn sich also das Berliner Bild in Komposition, Haltung der Figur und Hintergrundlandschaft offensichtlich auf van Dyck bezieht, so soll auch durch diesen Hinweis auf das höfische Repräsentationsporträt des 17. Jahrhunderts der Rang der Dargestellten noch unterstrichen werden.Die große schlanke Gestalt der 41-jährigen Lady Sunderlin steht hell vor einer dunklen Baumkulisse. Auf der rechten Seite öffnet sich das Bild in eine weite abendliche Landschaft. Über Hügel und Büsche hinweg wird der Blick zu den fernen Bergen geführt. Durch die warme Farbigkeit und die lockere, aufgelöste Malweise hat diese Landschaft viel mehr Anteil an der großartigen Wirkung des Bildnisses als es sonst einer Hintergrundkulisse zukommt. Mit ihrer rechten Hand rafft Lady Sunderlin leicht die weiße, in langen Falten herabfließende Seidenrobe, als ob sie gerade in einer Bewegung innehielte. Soweit galt das Vorbild des 17. Jahrhunderts, während die modischen Details wie das kostbare golddurchwirkte Chiffontuch, die reichen Goldstickereien am gerafften Ärmel, der lässig geschlungene goldene Gürtel und der blaue Turban »à bandeau« über der hochgetürmten Frisur der neuesten türkischen Mode folgen.Das Magazin la Mode hatte schon 1777 etwas ironisch zu der orientalischen Mode bemerkt, "that with little or no Operation, an English Lady, taken from one of our polite assemblies and conducted to Constantinople, would be properly dressed appear before the Grand Signior". Diese Verbindung von modischer Aktualität und traditionellem Bildtypus mit der unaufdringlichen Idealisierung der Dargestellten und der großzügigen Malweise ist daher ein besonders schönes Beispiel der Porträtkunst Reynolds’ aus seinen letzten Lebensjahren.| 200 Meisterwerke der europäischen Malerei - Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2019::::::::::_The portrait of Lady Sunderlin is among Reynolds’ major late works, and is almost exactly contemporary with Gainsborough’s great late work in the Gemäldegalerie, the Marsham Children of 1787. Lady Sunderlin (1745–1831) was the eldest daughter of Godolphin Roopers from Great Berkhamstead (Hertfordshire). In 1778, she married Richard Malone, a wealthy attorney from London who was created Baron Sunderlin of Lake Sunderlin by George III in 1785. It was then that Reynolds received a commission for a life-sized portrait, for which he was rewarded with a fee of £157,10 in November of 1786.Reynolds has recourse here to the classical Baroque pictorial type which had been introduced into England in the 17th century by van Dyck, and remained the model for representative portraits in the 18th century. In his annual address at the awards ceremonies of the Royal Academy, whose president Reynolds was beginning in 1768, the artist repeatedly explained the importance of traditional pictorial formulae, and in his own portraits, when the grand style was called for, he would cite the works of masters ranging from Michelangelo to van Dyck, at times even as pastiche. An awareness of such allusions and their variation is therefore vital for an understanding of his work. The obvious references to van Dyck in the Berlin painting with regard to the composition, figural pose, and background landscape are intended to underscore the status of the depicted individual by drawing upon courtly representative portraits of the 17th century.The large, slender figure of the 41-year-old Lady Sunderlin stands out brightly against the dark wooded backdrop. On the right, the picture opens up towards an expansive evening landscape. Traversing hills and shrubbery, the viewer’s gaze wanders towards the distant mountains. Through the warm palette and loose, relaxed execution, the landscape contributes more to the splendid effect of this portrait than is generally the case for scenic backdrops. With her right hand, Lady Sunderlin gently gathers the white silk robe that flows downward in long folds, as though pausing in movement momentarily. Up to this point, the image follows 17th century prototypes, while fashionable details such as the sumptuous chiffon cloth, interwoven with gold, the rich golden embroidery on the ruffled sleeve, the casually looped golden belt, and the blue turban à bandeau over the piled-up hairstyle follow the latest Turkish fashions.As early as 1777, the Magazin la Mode referred ironically to the Oriental style, remarking “that with little or no Operation, an English Lady, taken from one of our polite assemblies and conducted to Constantinople, would be properly dressed appear before the Grand Signor”.
